I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. In fall 2023, I will be joining the Department of Government at the London School of Economics as an Assistant Professor. My research examines questions in the political economy of development. In particular, my dissertation project investigates the roots of conflict over the use of eminent domain for infrastructure projects in India. I pose a new theory for state-society bargaining failure over land acquisition: well-organized social groups cannot commit not to sabotage projects in exchange for resources from the state, prompting the state to under-compensate groups affected by new development. Outside of my dissertation, my other research focuses on policies that promote inter-group tolerance. In my work I combine natural, field, and survey
